Do it yourself bottled water

Posted Monday 30.06.08

Why don’t people drink more tap water? This is what I don’t understand. Up until the past 6 months or so most brand name bottled water in the UK was more expensive per litre than petrol. In Australia it is common for a 600ml bottle to cost around $2.50 (approximately £1.25), a litre of unleaded is currently an average of $1.70 and people are up in arms about it. Priorities?

Tap water

Water, yes the stuff that regularly falls freely from the sky in the UK - so much so that people pull sickies to avoid it, or newspapers report the official arrival of summer on the first dry day after April 30th - sells by the bucket load in supermarkets and corner shops across the country, indeed the world.

A BBC Panorama investigation revealed Britons spend £2 billion a year on bottled water. For every £1 paid for a bottle, 10,000 litres of mains water could be purchased. Surely bottled water is the most elaborate long con ever and still people are believing it, but why?

It’s probably the convenience, but most commonly heard would be the reason that tap water tastes funny or emits an off-putting odour. These are two factors however that are easily remedied with a simple DIY install under sink water filtration system that provides “bottle fresh” tasting water instantly. Forget waiting for your 1 litre of tap water to trickle through your Brita filter jug, install a drinking water tap for an on-demand flow straight into your reusable Evian bottle.

With your own personal bottled water making facility in your home, not only do you save heaps of money by not spending out on over priced, over hyped bottled water, you’ll also be reducing the amount of plastic waste your empty bottles contribute to. On top of that, by filling up at home you’ll have your water with you from the moment you leave the house, no more taking a diversion en route to the bus stop to buy a bottle.

Common people, realise that bottled water is one big con! 71% of the earth is covered in it, 60% - 70% of our bodies are made of it, mother nature doesn’t charge for it, so why pay any more than you have to for the privilege of drinking it?

For those wanting to support the revolution (even if it is with a filter), get on over to the Tap website and buy yourself some nice water bottle stickers.
